2020.09.26 00:44 larki18 Interview with Brandon in Hot Press: "All Killer, No Filler"

Whilst buzzing with new album excitement - kd lang, Weyes Blood and Lindsey Buckingham are among those who helped his band score yet another No 1 - Brandon Flowers is sickened by the state of the American nation and praying for a Biden victory in November. He talks heroes and villains (thankfully there's more of the former) with Stuart Clark.
He hasn't seen any little girls riding tricycles down corridors or maniacally typed 'All work and no play makes Brandon a dull boy' a gazillion times whilst possessed by a demon, but otherwise life during lockdown for The Killers lead singer has been a lot like The Shining.
"Yeah, we've been away from everything and everyone up here in the Utah mountains, which when all of this craziness started in March and April were covered in snow," laughs Brandon, who, with there being nothing quite as romantic as a Hot Press interview, is curled up on the couch with his wife Tana Mundkowsky. "It is a bit like The Shining. We've done okay, though. Well, apart from the home schooling. That was a disaster!"
So his three pupils, Ammon (12), Gunnar (ten) and Henry (nine) gave Mr. Flowers a hard time.
"No, we're just really bad teachers," he grimaces. "I tried the piano a little bit with them and it didn't go down very well. Our oldest boy was able to navigate it - he's more independent - so that was nice but the other two had a tough time."
Asked whether he was a model pupil himself, Brandon gives me a withering "are you kidding?" look and says, "No, I wasn't a great student. It was before they were really handing out ADD diagnoses and I had a touch of that for sure. It feels like such a long time for kids to be sitting at a desk. I can't remember a time that I didn't really struggle."
How bad did it get?
"I missed most of sixth grade. I was having a hard time at school and we moved from one town in Utah to another one thirty miles away. We were doing a bunch of renovating at home, which was a nice experience. My Dad always had the oldies station on when I was a kid, so I discovered a lot of great music early on. I'm kind of equating what's happening with my kids now to that - hopefully we're bonding the way I did with my Dad. We've talked before, haven't we?"
Yep, twice in 2004 just before and immediately after The Killers' debut Hot Fuss went to number one in a pile of countries including Ireland (see page 24).
It's fair to say that Brandon's life since then has not been dull. We'll run through some of the many highlights later but first to the not inconsiderable matter of Imploding the Mirage, the band's eighth studio album, which has also claimed the top spot on both sides of the Irish Sea.
It's an, ahem, all Killers, no filler affair with a guest list that includes Lindsey Buckingham whose six-string participation in Caution is one of the numerous highlights. Was he still smarting at being booted out of Fleetwood Mac last year?
"Um..I think he was just, you know, happy to get the call," Brandon says diplomatically. "I can't speak to the problems within Fleetwood Mac but from our short encounter...I blame everyone else! We recorded that a couple of months before lockdown so we got to share a studio, which I loved, and afterwards go to dinner. He was open to everything. We felt like we needed something for the end of Caution and to hear Lindsey deliver his solo like he did is something we'll remember forever."
Was there a money song they nailed and thought, "We're okay, we have that one in the bad, the rest will follow"?
"I think Bono once said, 'If you aren't sure what your second single is, you don't have one,'" he reflects. "There's another great quote from [legendary Queen producer] Roy Thomas Baker which is "There's no such thing as a bad mix of a good song." So these things were swirling around my head - 'Maybe Caution isn't good enough.' So I kind of went and forced My Own Soul's Warning out of the universe. I knew I was really proud of that one, and then we came up with Running Towards a Place and Blowback, and I was really like, 'I can walk with my head held high now.'
A kitchen-sink drama about a 'born into poor white trash' girl leaving home on the bus - it's so cinematic the screenplay writes itself - Blowback features Adam Granduciel, which I'm assuming is code for just dicking around in the studio.
"No, he does a great synthesizer on the second verse, and a really cool slide part on the chorus in the counter melody, which he took and applied effects to," Brandon says, sticking up for his new studio buddy.
Whose idea was it to also throw a bit of Frankie Knuckles and Jamie Principle's Chicago house classic, Your Love, into the Blowback mix?
"Did you pick up on that?"
I knew it was something I'd bopped around to during my chronically ill spent youth, but no, I had to wait for the nice record company person to mail me the credits, which also confirm the sampled presence of Krautrock legends Can on Dying Breed.
"I wouldn't sit around listening to them all the time, but I know about Can's impact on a lot of the music that's shaped me. They're in our DNA. That song was going down a very particular road, but the sample opened it up. As for the Frankie Knuckles one, that was Shawn Everett's idea."
Everett being the quintuple Grammy Award-winning Canadian who co-produced Imploding the Mirage with Foxygen's Jonathan Rado. He previously shared a studio with Bob Dylan, as did another album contributor, Blake Mills, who plays guitar on The Big Zim's Rough and Rowdy Ways. Did he give Brandon and the boys the nod that a new Dylan record was on its way?
"No, he kept his cards quite close. Only a few people knew Murder Most Foul came out and I thought it was going to be a one-off. And then we started getting more singles. I really love I Contain Multitudes. Gosh, that song just floors me." Murder Most Foul feels like doing round to Bob's house and flicking through his records and his DVDs. It's 17 minutes long and too short.
"Yeah, I loved it," Brandon enthuses. "What a song to come back with - especially during lockdown."
Dylan dropped Murder Most Foul just after we'd seen Bono sing Let Your Love Be Known in his living room after very obviously staying up all night, and just prior to Michael Stipe debuting No Time For Love Like Now (there's a theme developing here) in his own not-so-humble-abode. It's interesting how many big artists thought, 'All bets are off, let's just get it out there,' during the height of the pandemic.
"Yeah, necessity is the mother of invention," Brandon nods. "The first performance of Caution ended up being for our friend Jimmy Kimmel. It's just me and Ronnie in a bathroom. No amplifier, no effects, no Auto-Tune. It forces you to prove yourself in a different way, so it's been interesting."
Lockdown also found The Killers performing a poignantly paired down version of Land of the Free, their 2019 standalone, which reacts to the murder of George Floyd with the updated lines: 'When I go out in my car, I don't think twice/But if you're the wrong color skin/You grow up looking over both your shoulders/in the land of the free/How many killings must one man watch in his home/Til he sees the price on the tag?/Eight measured minutes and 46 seconds/Another boy in the bag/Another stain on the flag." Like Bruce Springsteen's American Skin (41 Shots) before it, it's a damning indictment of the institutionalized racism that blights US law enforcement.
"We did it in Provo, in a great studio, June Audio, which is about an hour from where I live, Brandon adds soberly, "I just felt compelled to rework it and document it. I was broke. I believe it was the CNN video. I cried on my couch watching it. I couldn't believe that people weren't rioting already. I thought that first night that things were going to start burning - and they did. It simmered for a minute before they went onto the streets."
Depressingly, Provo was also where the 15,000-strong Utah Citizens Alarm militia staged its first anti-Black Lives Matter counter demonstration, which resulted in the shooting of a passing motorist. The fallout is still being felt statewide.
"You get people coming out of the woodwork for strange things like that," Brandon rues. "They're worried about their guns being taken away from them. Whole campaigns are run on issues like that."
Does Brandon regard Trump vs. Biden as the most important election he's been able to vote in?
"I think so. You know, four years before was important and my wife and I voted for Hilary Clinton. We deserve more from our leaders. It's sad that democracy has led to this, and that celebrity has gone this far."
Having done some top quality digressing, let us return to Imploding the Mirage, which with Lucius, Weyes Blood and a certain catherine dawn lang also on the guest list is purposefully not The Killers boys' club of old.
"The women being on there was a very pre-determined thing we wanted to do because we had the album cover picked out long before we finished recording," Brandon explains. "It's a painting by Thomas Blackshear of these two celestial beings, so it needed to have a female component. We started thinking about women who might work, and came up with Lucius who are great singers and toured with Roger Waters; Weyes who'd just made a record with Rado - her bridge on My God is so beautiful, and then because I needed someone to basically represent my mother on Lightning Fields, kd lang."
Was she told that when they were selling the song to her?
"No, she still doesn't know that," he says a tad guiltily. "It was my late mother talking to my dad. It was during quarantine so she was up in Canada and sent it in. It ended up being great. She's iconic, and it was so gracious of her to lend her voice to us."
As I mentioned in my Imploding the Mirage album review, it's a peach of a song with a half-inched Pet Shop Boys intro giving way to a barrage of synths and guitars of the squalling maelstrom variety.
Brandon is great but lang is even better as she belts out her Mrs. Flowers verses - "Don't beat yourself up/You laid good ground/Look at 'em walk from scratch to sundown/You put in the work and then some/Where is all this coming from?" with 80s AQR gusto.
It's another example of Brandon painting his characters in an almost Springsteenian way.
"I was lucky enough to get to Bruce's Broadway show and it was just the best," he coos. "To do that and Western Stars and the autobiography at this stage in his career gives us all hope. His work rate is phenomenal. It's almost an addiction. You don't want to take the opportunity for granted. It becomes part of your DNA and your identity."
Bruce's film version of Western Stars is part of The Killers' reason for working with Muse and Halsey director Sing Lee on their own Imploding the Mirage short.
"It's going to be 30 minutes long and feature Caution and snippets of other songs," is all a spoiler-avoiding Brandon will say for now. Given Lee's past output, it's likely to mirror the epic widescreen feel of the record - and then some.
I happened on a Youtube clip the other day of Brandon grinning like a kid at Christmas as he belts out Thunder Road with The Boss. One of the best moments of his life?
"It's up there," he reminisces fondly. "It was 2008 and we were on the same Pinkpop festival bill as him and the E- Street Band in Holland. I looked over during Mr. Brightside and behind our sound engineer you saw these Aviators and a very familiar countenance nodding along. We finished the set and walking back to the dressing rooms with Bruce, he said, 'Do you wanna do a little Thunder Road later?' It was just a dream. My favorite part was the preparing for it. I got to go back to his dressing room and we chose which verses we were going to sing. It was almost like a test, you know? I knew all the lyrics by heart and I wrote them by hand, and he helped me me mark up which parts he would sing and which ones I would sing. We got a guitar and worked it out. That behind the scenes moment was very special. I didn't really have time to feel nervous. If it had been suggested a day or two before I don't know if I could have made it!"
Before we let Brandon and Tana snuggle up properly on the sofa - two's company, three when one's a journo is definitely a crowd - what have been his other 'pinch me, am I dreaming' moments?
"In the early days, it was things like being recognized by people you admire," he concludes. "Getting to open for U2 on the first album. Or Morrissey. That was like, 'How did this happen?' These are people who I still had posters of on my wall. Glastonbury 2019 was a special gig for us. I was just really proud and thankful for everything. It felt full circle. That was a great moment."
Brandon Flowers has always been upfront about The Killers' influences - and especially when talking to Hot Press!
You can tell from the vastness of his Utah mountain retreat and the cut of his designer cobbler that Brandon Flowers has done extremely well in life, but in some ways he's still the same shy 22 year old with a nervous giggle and the serious musical hots for The Cars, he Beatles, U2, The Cure, The Smiths, New Order, and Oass - roughly in that order - that I met for the first time backstage in 2004 at Oxegen.
Hot Fuss had only been out a few weeks and, while there was a buzz about them topping the Saturday New Band stage with Halie, Sone & Daughters and Razorlight on the undercard, there was no indication that some of the world's biggest stadiums awaited.
If we hadn't mislaid the video of it, you'd be able to see the brilliant bit in the interview when a drunken punter who'd managed to sneak past security, staggered over to us and initiated this conversation:
Drunken punter: "Are you in a band?"
Brandon: "Yeah."
Drunken punter: "Whassyername?"
Brandon: "The Killers."
Drunken punter: "The Killers? Ah, yer a bag of shite!"
I think we know who had the last laugh there.
"There's a bit of 'The grass is always greener' going on, yeah," Brandon, who I noted had a bit of the Matt Damon about him, agreed when I accused him of being an Anglophile. "We've never thought, 'Oh, we wish we were British,' but the music from The Beatles all the way up has always been really good. Hearing The Cure's Head on the Door for the first time was pretty special, and The Joshua Tree was a big record for us. I was inside the heart the last time U2 played Las Vegas, which was amazing (Before Angry in Athlone writes in, Brandon does know that U2 are Irish, Editor).
"Our guitarist, Dave, placed a 'Musician Wanted' ad mentioning Oasis, which came directly after me seeing them in Vegas as well, and deciding that's the direction I want to take. A couple of weeks later we were a band."
Asked whether he'd met any of his heroes, Brandon beamed and said, "Morrissey stood right next to me at soundcheck when we opened for him in LA. You've looked up to this guy since you were twelve and there he is eyeballing you."
By the time our paths crossed again in early December in the penthouse (natch) of Dublin's Clarion hotel, The Killers really were living the rock 'n' rock dream.
"It's been one amazing thing after another," he gushed. "Gold discs, being sat between Sarah Michelle Gellar and Geri Halliwell on The Jonathan Ross Show and looking up at Irving Plaza in New York and seeing David Bowie singing along to Mr. Brightside. I couldn't believe it! Afterwards he complimented every single one of us individually, and said that he could hear the whole history of rock 'n' rock in our songs. He's a hell of a musician and a hell of a nice guy. Elton John's the same - he's actually coming to our Manchester show tomorrow which is a follow on from us doing a TV special with him in Paris."
He almost started hyperventilating when I took him out on to the balcony, pointed at U2's former Hanover Quay HQ on the other side of the Liffey, and told him they were just about to announce their own branded iPod (remember them?)
"Man, that'd be so fucking cool!" he enthused. "The first thing I'd stick on it is the U2 Digital Complete Works followed by John Lennon Imagine, David Bowie Hunky Dory, Morrissey Vauxhall & I and The Cure Head on the Door. Those are the records I'd go into a burning house to rescue."
Brandon was in fan mode again when he finished by saying: "Watching Smiths videos with my brother when I was 12 and hearing Just What I Needed by The Cars on the radio are the two main reasons I got into music. As far as I'm concerned, Ric Ocasek is God!"

2020.09.23 17:55 brennen_p1 My Thoughts on the finalists performances + My thoughts on this season as a whole

Ok so we made it! Last night’s finale night wasn’t the best finale we’ve seen......a lot of acts faltered, but then again a lot of acts proved themselves tonight. I’ll give you my thoughts on each individual performances, plus my thoughts on the acts as a whole this season along with if I thought they deserved their finale spot compared to other finalists from past years. After that I’ll give you my thoughts from this season as a whole! So let’s do this:
  1. Roberta Battaglia - Ok so there’s no denying Roberta CAN sing. She does have an incredible voice, and she proved that in the auditions. But, for some reason I’ve been feeling let down by her quarterfinals, semi finals, and now finale performance. I feel like her rendition of Shallow was her best, and then she picked the obvious, karaoke song choices. No hate against her at all, I just feel like tonight she was flat on some parts, and obviously was very nervous. It also felt very stale, everything seemed blatantly choreographed. Obviously I know everything is choreographed, but you should try to hide it. Every single step she took, every single note she hit seemed like it was over rehearsed. It didn’t feel fluid, it didn’t have emotion. I felt the same way from her remediation of “What About Us.” Her quarterfinals performance was good, but again I just didn’t feel the emotion.
Best Performance: Auditions
Deserved Finale Spot: No
Standing Ovation: No
  1. BAD Salsa- Man I love them! Every single time they perform I am shocked by how fast they move, some of those stunts seem INSANE. Seeing them perform live in front of the judges was really cool, I feel like they are V.Unbeatable compacted into two people. That being said, tonight they didn’t have their best performance. In their audition, quarterfinals, and semi finals everything seemed so fluid, it was like they were spinning at lightning speed, and tonight I did notice some mistakes. It felt a little choppy to me unfortunately. That being said, they probably are the most talented people in this finale. I find myself enjoying them every single time they hit the stage, and I’m so glad they made it this far. Winner worthy? I think so. If you look at all 4 of their performances, they have constantly upped their game and proved why they deserved to be here. I wish tonight they showed some stunts we have never seen before, as most of them we have seen done, or done better. But for what they do, they are incredible.
Best Performance: Quarterfinals
Deserved Finale Spot: Yes
Standing Ovation: Yes
  1. Kenadi Dodds- Ok so I don’t really know if this is a controversial opinion, but she had an amazing night tonight. On a night where I really wanted to see people step up out of their comfort zones, I think Kenadi did that the best. I was feeling very let down by her audition, quarterfinals, AND semi finals performance. Her original in QF might’ve been my least favorite performance from the live shows. She didn’t step into her confidence yet, and yeah she has a good voice, but just having a good voice doesn’t warrant a finale spot. Covering Carrie Underwoods is a very, VERY hard task, and I don’t know if she rose to that occasion, but from what we’ve seen before, I think she gave her best tonight. I do agree with Howie on this one, when she’s really belting it out, that’s where she hits home. She did the absolute most she could’ve to make the top 5. Obviously I don’t think she will win, but from the notes she hit to the confidence she had tonight, she did a very good job.
Best Performance: Finals
Deserved Finale Spot: No
Standing Ovation: Yes
  1. Brandon Leake- Ok so I KNOW this is a very controversial opinion, but if I’m being completely honest, Brandon is my favorite act not only from this season, but one of the best I have ever seen. People have been saying they don’t think poetry is a talent, but I disagree 1000%. He moves people from his words, he tells his story, he’s not afraid to comment on huge issues. From revealing deeply personal stories about his father and sister, to talking about the injustices he faces as a black American, to talking about now the future he invisions for his child, he has constantly gave top tier performances all season. Every single time I watch him I feel compelled to give him a standing ovation, he is.......I can’t even describe the emotions I feel watching him. I know A TON of people are going to disagree with me but this is his season to win. He is called to move, and that’s what he has done. If he doesn’t win, I will be very disappointed, but I understand. I feel like you can’t compare him to singer or dancers or magicians because he is in a completely different category. He is far and beyond the best spoken word artist I’ve ever seen. All of the praise beside, I do feel like tonight was his weakest performance of all 4 he has done. He didn’t have as much to work with, and I feel as thought it might’ve been rushed to put together. I feel like his semi finals was his most powerful, and to me, that’s my favorite performance not only of the season, but probably of all of the seasons I’ve watched (I started watching in S11 religiously and have continued since then). He is my pick to win tonight.
Best Performance: Semi-Finals
Deserved Finale Spot: Yes
Standing Ovation: Yes
  1. Broken Roots- I know a lot of people hate them. I KNOW THAT. I am kinda one of them. I don’t hate them, but I feel as though they haven’t lived up to the other singers hype. They will obviously be in the top 5 cuz country does incredibly well on this show. In the Air Tonight was an.........interesting song choice to say the least. I feel like tonight, as I do with a lot of other acts, was their weakest performance of the season. Country is where they excel, and since they moved out of that lane, who knows where they’re going to end up. I don’t have a lot to say about them except they have been such a wildcard this season. I don’t think there’s ever been an act eliminated in judge cuts that was brought back so last minute and has done so well in America’s votes. Looking back on their auditions, quarterfinals, and semi-finals, I would say yes, they deserve to be in the finale. But tonight, I’m not so sure. I LOVED their backdrop, but it just felt very campy to me. The performance didn’t go anywhere besides the belting they did (which ended up sounding very screamy and uncontrolled). Look, they’ve done good in the competition, but good isn’t good enough to be in the finale of the biggest talent competition in the world. AGAIN, no hate to any of these acts, I just think there were better singers to fill this spot then Broken Roots.
Best Performance: Semi-Finals
Deserved Finale Spot: No
Standing Ovation: No
  1. Bello Sisters- I feel the same way about Bello Sisters as I do about Broken Roots. They’re just okay, even though this act requires so much strength. This was, again as I keep saying, their weakest performance to date. In the auditions, I actually predicted them to be in the finale (I know, CRAZY!!!). They were incredibly unique, there strength was INSANE, and I was so excited to see what they would do next. Their quarterfinals didn’t disappoint, they brought danger, the music, the lighting, all of it was insane. I also have the same feeling about their semi-finals, though it didn’t live up to their other performances. Then we saw their finale performance. The 70s/80s theme was........nice? The danger aspect with the crossbow was really stupid because there really wasn’t any danger. I felt very confused most of the time, the tricks felt disjointed, and it just didn’t flow as nicely as the other performances. I am really disappointed because I was one of the people rooting for them, and tonight they kinda let me down. I don’t think these three could sustain a whole Vegas show, and since they were in the Dunkin save in the QF, sadly they have no chance of winning. But hey, maybe they’ll come back for champions and surprise us all just like Duo Transcend did.’s unlikely.
Best Performance: Quarterfinals
Deserved Finale Spot: No
Standing Ovation: No
  1. Archie Williams- ! HOT TAKE INCOMING ! Archie actually stepped up to the plate tonight. Yes, his audition was great. Yes, I predicted him into the finals. No, he isn’t the BEST singer. I think most of that had to do with song choices, he picked very obscure songs that nobody could really connect to. Tonight he picked one of my favorite songs, “Blackbird.” I think he did the absolute most he could’ve done tonight. I agree with Howie, every single time he performs he brings on a whole new meaning to a song. This felt so emotional, so profound, so intense, it honestly took my breath away. He was very pitchy into the longer held notes, but for some reason that didn’t take anything away from his performance. He stuck to his roots and did an incredibly emotional song that I feel resonated with a lot of America tonight. No, I don’t think he’ll win the whole thing, but you really can’t take away from his story. 30+ years??!?!?!? Nobody can even IMAGINE what that is like. It’s truly one of the craziest stories I have ever heard in my time watching AGT. So yes, I thoroughly enjoyed his performance tonight, even if a lot of you didn’t. Great job tonight Archie, you really did it.
Best Performance: Finals
Deserved Finale Spot: Yes
Standing Ovation: Yes
  1. Daneliya Tuleshova- Lemme be COMPLETLEY honest for a minute. I didn’t get the hype. Her audition was okay? Her quarterfinals was great, but pitchy and she fell flat on some of the runs. Her semi-finals was great, but again bad song choice and she did fall flat on some parts. But tonight.......she blew me away. A lot of people have been telling me they didn’t like the song choice, but I feel like she picked the best song. He wasn’t flat once, some of the notes she hit were incredible, she was very seasoned, and to me was one of the best performances of the night. Not to mention the backdrop is probably my favorite out of the whole live shows. Before tonight, I predicted she would be near the bottom, but I think she’s deserving of the top 3. I get the hype now, I do!!!! Again, I saw her on worlds best and I think she was better there, but her voice obviously has gotten deeper and with that brought challenges. She regained her confidence tonight, and I’m glad she did because watching last night, I felt like she saved the whole finale. She brought us out of a drought of a couple of bad acts and SOARED. I’m actually so glad she did because I had high expectations for her tonight, and she exceeded them!! She isn’t my pick to win tonight, but if she did I wouldn’t be upset.
Best Performance: Finale
Deserved Finale Spot: Yes
Standing Ovation: Yes
  1. Alan Silva- Ok so I’ve had a love-hate relationship with him and this act. His audition was incredible, but the song choice was okay? His QF had a HORRIBLE song choice, and he just did more of the same I felt like. His semifinals had a better song choice, but he was on a night where production felt the need to add fire to every single act, so that’s where I stood with that. he was incredible. I felt like he gave a finale worthy performance, one of the only ones that I felt gave such a performance. I actually felt like I was in Las Vegas watching this incredibly artistic act. I’ve been waiting for him to do something where it isn’t just danger danger danger, I wanted him to add more art to it. And tonight he finally did that AS WELL as having danger with it. He is one of the 3 I believe stepped up tonight and did what I was hoping for. The finale of his act was actually my favorite moment of tonight. This is where I feel like I’m kinda glad that they moved to universal because it just looks so stunning outside. Would his act be moved inside for Las Vegas, or would they be able to hold it outside if he ended up winning? Who knows lol. Also, did the judges watch his act outside or where they not there? I assume they weren’t cuz we didn’t see them, but then again, who knows.
Best Performance: Finale
Deserved Finale Spot: Yes
Standing Ovation: Yes
  1. Cristina Rae- Here we are. The last performance of the season! First off I have to say, thank you Heidi for picking an amazing golden buzzer. I think we can all agree she is Heidi’s best GB of all time. Now, let’s get to the performance. This was a VERY unexpected song choice. But, I feel like it strangely worked. She showcased her belty notes which I feel like we missed, and of course her falsetto which SHE SLAYS. I think she is the most talented singer I have EVER SEEN on this show, she’s up there with the likes of Brian Justin Crum and Glennis Grace. I think she may very well be going home with that one million dollar prize and a headlining show in Vegas. That being said, I feel like the song choice was a wasted opportunity.....::I had hope she would sing creep at some point in the competition. I feel like that would’ve solidified her win even more. Her semi finals and finals song choices were good, and she did exactly, and more, of what I was expecting, just not the best song choices. That being said, she had the best performance tonight by a mile. I’m so glad she closed off because it was a SLAYYAGE of a performance. Winning worthy? I think so, we’ll just have to see. Looking back, she has constantly delivered every single time.
Best Performance: Quarterfinals
Deserved Finale Spot: Yes
Standing Ovation: Yes
And there we go! This season as a whole was probably the craziest I have watched. I feel like this season's GB's were the best I have ever seen (with the exception of Roberta). We saw the most changes with auditions having no audience, no Heidi (for the most part), and guest judge Eric Stonestreet, to Judge Cuts being outside, to live shows with no audience and no Simon, to having Kelly Clarkson and Kenan Thompson, it was interesting to say the least. I feel like this season also has some of the most unique acts we’ve ever seen, with the likes of Sheldon Riley, divas and drummers of Compton, Bello & Annalise, and Jonathan Goodwin. I also feel like there was a SHIT TON of comedians this season, yet most of them were cut in judge cuts, and then again none of them made the semi finals. As a whole, this season did the best it could’ve done with the circumstances, but it failed in many ways. For one, most of my favorite acts were cut in the QF, meaning we only saw at most 2 performances from them. This also had a lot of unexpected eliminations, from the likes of Sheldon, Brett, and Malik, all acts I feel were good enough to make the finale. That being said, I enjoyed the audition portions the most out of any of the seasons I’ve watched prior. It was very diverse, and gave me some new favorite performances. Now, here are my standings for the seasons as a whole:
Top 5 for finale WANTS:
5th- Kenadi Dodds
4th- Daneliya Tuleshova

2020.09.21 09:14 BertisOkay 0001 - In The Wee Small Hours - Frank Sinatra

Hell my name is Bert and welcome to my insane journey. I have decided to embark on the adventure of listening to and dissecting every album on the list of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. I hope this post is welcome here, as it seems there is no other discussion currently taking place, if not i will remove it and take it elsewhere. I hope that someone will join me on this journey as I discover or rediscover some of the most revered and coveted albums of all time. My goal in this exercise is to broaden my musical horizons and open my eyes to albums I would otherwise not give the time of day.
Now, without further ado, let's talk Frank Sinatra - In The Wee Small Hours.
First, let's start with some context:
In The Wee Small Hours is the 9th studio album by New Jersey born singer, actor, and producer Francis Albert Sinatra AKA Frank Sinatra. His third offering from Capitol Records, ITWSH is the solidification of the comeback era for Frank and started his string of legendary albums that cemented his legacy as one of the greatest of his era.
When he released his first album in 1946, The Voice of Frank Sinatra, his fame was already at it's peak. The so-called 'Sinatramania' swept across teenage girls of the time and it showed on the charts, rocketing his debut record to the top of the billboard charts. His single releases leading up to his second album were also peaking at the top of the charts, and the album Songs by Sinatra hit the top 10. Following his second album Columbia records saw fit to release a Christmas album (which is always a solid career move) which only lead his fan base to drift further away.
With some press negativity in his personal life, and 3 poor performing albums following the Christmas debacle, Frank was released by Columbia. This and a messy divorce led Sinatra into financial difficulties, causing him to turn to Las Vegas residency as a gig to get by. Joining the Rat Pack, Sinatra solidified his more mature stylings in his music and his personality and started the stages of a comeback.
After the release of the film From Here to Eternity, Frank signed a deal with Capitol records and started recording again, this time with a renewed sense of enthusiasm in his music. Recording two albums, Songs for Young Lovers, and Swing Easy!, Frank was definitely shooting right back into the main stream with multiple singles from both albums charting in the top 10.
However, emotional turmoil was not a stranger to Sinatra, and another messy divorce caused a significant pain on his heart. This, and his past experiences assembling album after album, lead him to build what is considered by many to be one of the first concept albums. In the Wee Small Hours.
On with the Album:
ITWSH has 16 tracks and clocks in at 48:41. Wikipedia labels it's genre as Vocal Jazz/ Traditional pop and i feel like those labels are appropriate. As I stated earlier, it is considered by many as on of the first concept albums, and by the pure definition of the term, it definitely has a concept. Which is to say, it's a break-up album. Frank clearly chose songs that all focus on the theme of loss, heartbreak, depression, failed relationships, and loneliness.
Starting with the opening track, In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning. Frank bellows about always thinking of a girl that he misses, so much so that he can't sleep. While he is singing in his trademark deep voice the strings in the background provide the necessary tension that is backed up by the other lyrics, "You'd be her's if only she would call". You can almost feel the single teardrop down his cheek as he signs the last line.
Mood Indigo, follows the theme further. Finding a more clever way of saying he is feeling blue, Sinarta is singing again about being lonely and crying over this woman who left him and feeling as if no one cares for him. Almost leading to thoughts of suicide at a point, he feels the need to tell you that you don't know how bad it feels to lose the love of this special person.
Glad to Be Unhappy changes the mood a little, coming at this from a person who is in denial. Feigning happiness at the feeling of unrequited love, calling himself a fool and feeling like the but end of the joke. All over what sounds like a cheery laid back instrumental, I feel like this adds to the denial or almost sarcastic feeling of this song.
I Get Along Without You Very Well, again follows the previous track with the sarcastic denial of his sadness. Saying that he's doing okay when every little thing reminds him of this person. Saying that he's forgotten when the only thing he can do is feel the pain of losing the love. Then during the bridge he breaks down and contemplates calling her again, but remind him self that he's doing "okay" without her.
Deep in a Dream is a briefly cheery song, where Sinatra is literally dreaming of his lost love coming back and them being happy again. Feeling the touch and love again in his dream, he admits that he still loves her to himself and to the dream girl. Suddenly he is woken by being burnt by his cigarette he was smoking when he fell asleep (that's a fire hazard for sure). His heart is broken again as he feels the loss as if it just happened.
I See Your Face Before Me is more of the same from previous tracks with a twist, as we see Frank trying to convince the girl (or maybe himself) that if she knew how much he loves her that she would instantly fall in love with him again.
Can't We Be Friends is Sinatra singing about his lack of self confidence, with him saying that he knows any girl he goes after is not romantically interested in him and only wants to be friends. (I think the last two songs prove that even Frank Sinatra could have been an incel with the power of the internet)
When Your Lover Has Gone picks up on the lack of confidence again with Frank asking what the point in having any romantic attachment is if they are always doomed to fail. Obviously the sadness in this coming from his two divorces he has experienced by this point.
What Is This Thing Called Love is Frank showing his confusion and frustration in the process of romance. Demonstrating that he doesn't understand why love can make you feel the highest heights but also the lowest lows.
Last Night When We Were Young has Sinatra fawning over the memories of teenage puppy love. When love was as simple as if you like kissing each other was enough to show your love. Again showing his confusion and frustration with how it used to be so easy and now that he is older he doesn't know how to love.
I'll Be Around is Frank hoping that the next romantic partner for this woman will not work out and him saying that he's always ready to fill in that spot in her heart. It's another case of showing that Frank hasn't moved on and can only focus on this girl.
Ill Wind is the first song on the album that has Sinatra saying that the depression that he is feeling needs to go away so he can focus on something other than his breakup. Especially saying "You're only misleading the sunshine I'm needing" and "Let me rest today" essentially meaning that he knows that his thoughts aren't healthy and he's tired of thinking them.
It Never Entered My Mind talks about how he always thought they would be together forever. He never even gave the idea of not having this person any thought at all, which I feel adds to the heartbreak of the song, although I do admit the line " Now I even have to scratch my back myself " is very silly.
Dancing in the Ceiling is pretty much a redo of the opening track, talking about being kept up at night with visions of his loved one on his ceiling. There's not much else to say about this one other than the instrumental on this one feels extra bare for some reason. Not that there has been a lot to say about the backing lines, but this is the first time I've noticed them lacking.
I'll Never Be the Same is Frank reflection on how profoundly changed he was by the experience of his relationship with this person and especially the feeling of the heartbreak. I feel like this is definitely carried over from earlier tracks and reinforcing the thoughts before the final track.
This Love of Mine feels like a very appropriate closing to this album as Frank doesn't actually come to a solid conclusion. He ends on the fact that he feels as if he will always feel love for this person and he doesn't know how he will get over it, which has been the consistent message this whole album. Going back and forth between denial and acceptance, and landing on neither. The unknown. Which is where he feels this love has gone, on and on, into the unknown.
This was the first full album I've ever listened to by Sinatra and I have to say I enjoyed it more than I thought I was going to. On my initial listen I couldn't get over the samey instrumentation on most of the album, but after a few more listens I really learned to focus on the story Frank was telling. Especially upon learning the context of the recording, I feel like I could hear him more sad than I could before.
One thing I want to touch on briefly before I give my rating is the idea of the concept album. When I first read that this was a concept album I was kind of blown away, I guess because from a modern standpoint I was looking for a deep story or something. This album definitely changed my perspective on that though, presenting instead songs that all were about the same idea, and not an over arching story.
Overall, I enjoyed my listen, but it definitely is not my favourite. I don't foresee myself coming back to this album in particular, although I do feel like I appreciate Sinatra more now than I did before.
What do you think about this album? I'm curious to know if my interpretations matched yours, and why you liked or disliked it more than I did. I hope to do this with every album on this list eventually, although that will obviously take a very long time. I don't have a set schedule for posting this, although I would like to do at least once a week. Next time will be #2 on the list, Elvis Presley by Elvis Presley.

2020.09.19 23:58 CapybaraWookiee [S] Capy's Survivor: Island of Legacies (S21)

Hello! Welcome or welcome back to Capy's Survivor! This season we are headed to the Island of Legacies! We are once again playing the game of outwitting, outplaying, and outlasting your fellow castaways, whether that be by flirtatious behavior, backstabbing your opponents, or making plenty of allies. This is Capy's Survivor: Island of Legacies! I will not be doing write-ups with the posts because I don't have time. I will instead work on them while I can, and post a post with some of them once I'm done.
Meet the Castaways:
Legatum Tribe:
Isulam Tribe:

Season: Capy's Survivor: Island of Legacies

20th: Pastor Frank- I think his real downfall here this early on was just his age. He was not doing well in competitions, which caused him to be a target. Because he was only in an alliance of 3 with 4 possible swing votes, I think his fate was set in stone.
19th: Noah- This one really wasn't his fault. Tyler knew his target was big, because of his sister. He found the idol, and he knew it was now or never. I feel like it might be because Noah didn't socialize much with the swing votes and because his mother's moves were so fresh in everyone's minds from last season, there was just no escaping this one.
18th: Ha Eun- I feel like her outing was a bit similar to Pastor Frank's. She is older and was holding the tribe back in challenges, but I feel like her alliance wouldn't flip on her for 2 reasons. The first being they obviously wanted the numbers and the second being sympathy because of her story. I think the other side knew this and was lucky enough that Declan had the idol, which the other side knew and were going to attempt to flush it. But alas, bye Ha Eun.
17th: Tyler- Well his track record isn't nearly as good as his sisters. Yes, his big move in Episode 2 was nice to watch, but alas, him being one of the swing votes, and his threat level being high because of his sister just was too much to lower. Also, Tyler told Tillie that they were targeting her, I mean, he helped the tribe by flushing her idol I guess.
16th: Declan- I think this is because of his idoling out Ha Eun, Mari and Leslie didn't really appreciate that, and they knew Declan couldn't be trusted, especially if he made the merge. So they took advantage of the 4-4 tribe split at the swap, and they threw the challenge and sent Declan packing, and Louis shocked.
15th: Mari- I think Leslie and Mari only realized their mistake AFTER the tribal council, knowing they were outnumbered and that the other side had a low chance of flipping. They targeted Mari because of this move, because Leslie threw her under the bus and told them that it was Mari's idea, painting her as untrustworthy.
14th: Tillie- This one was another inevitable one. They knew the other side had a low chance of flipping, and I think the only reason this one wasn't Kendall was because of her immunity win. But the other problem is that Kendall pulled a Leslie, and told the other side about Tillie's gullible-ness, which would've not been good going into the merge.
13th: Trent- Kendall and River, knowing the 5-person alliance was too big not to be cracking, decided to exploit those cracks. They lied to divide the sides, Shawn, Trent, and Joey on one side, with Levin and Luna on the other. They knew both targets, as they were the swing votes now instead of the outsiders, and they decided that Levin and Luna's target of Trent was much better for them approaching the merge than Shawn, Trent, and Joey's target of Luna.
12th: Levin- I like to think that at the merge, Levin just kind of gave in. He knew Leslie was most likely going to flip, but he still had hope for some of his other small alliances, such as Luna and Shawn, or Joey and Louis. But his gameplay thus far was just too risky to keep him around, and everyone except Shawn sent him packing.
11th: Luna- I'd like to think that Kendall was the original target here, and the other side approached Louis, Leslie, and Joey with the offer, but then Kendall, knowing Shawn was too loyal, convinced him that Luna was a much bigger threat because she was a danger to Kendall's game, Kendall went to the other side, knowing they thought they might have been screwed if the other side had an idol, and Kendall exploited this fear into a Luna vote-out.
10th: Kendall- Knowing River had an idol, Kendall thought she might have been safe from this one. But Leslie saw past her lie that it was Shawn and Joey who flipped and decided it was best to get the untrustworthy Kendall out while she could.
9th: Shawn- Shawn was just too loyal. He told his alliance everything, including the flip at the Final 11, and not voting for Levin at the Final 12. So River and Joey approached the other alliance and told them that Shawn was the target. They also told them they are voting for the intended target of Shawn, Bhit, in case Shawn has an idol (which they know he doesn't).
8th: Leslie- River knew it was either her or Joey, and she knew she had made bigger moves than Joey, so she was probably the target. She also decided it might be best to get Leslie out, as she is a strategic threat, and River had the idol, so that made it easy. River managed to block 6 votes and idol out Leslie.
7th: Bhit- Joey knew he was in trouble, so he approached Raven and told her that Bhit was probably the best person to go, as he thinks Bhit is a challenge beast and just hasn't really been showing it yet. Joey also had an old alliance with Louis, so he knew he could get him on their side. He then convinced Louis to convince the other side that River found the idol again and that they should just be careful. He then pulls Joe and Vivianne off to the side and tells them that he thinks Raven is untrustworthy, and she is so quiet they would never know, they agree. He then goes to River and Bhit and tells them that Joe approached him with the offer of voting out Bhit, which convinced them. Joey somehow manages to pull this off and Bhit goes home by a 3-2-2 vote.
6th: River- Even though Joey just pulled off a huge strategic move, he still manages to pinpoint the target on his own ally, River. He convinces River and Louis that he is still trustworthy, but he still thinks Raven isn't, they agree. Raven, Vivianne, and Joe are still voting River. It is too late before Joey realizes his mistake in his math. It ties, and Louis decides it might be best to regain a bit of the other side's trust, so he revotes River.
5th: Louis- Louis' big mistake was aligning himself with Joey. Joey manages to convince the other side, even with all of his mistrusting moves, that he was the one that revoted for River, despite her being his biggest ally. They think this is a viable argument, and decide to vote Louis. He then tells them that he is voting Raven, just in case of an idol.
4th: Joey- This one is obvious. Raven, Vivianne, and Joe don't want to vote each other out, and they think that Joey would beat any of them, so when Raven wins the final immunity, they celebrate by voting out Joey unanimously 3-1.
Tied for 2nd: Vivianne and Joe- Joe didn't have a strong game, and his two votes came from his social connections, Kendall, and River, because she thought he did the best during questioning. Even though they had nearly the same challenge wins, Vivianne still only got 2 votes, versus Raven's 5, getting Bhit and Louis' votes, for a combination of being their close ally, winning challenges, and her questioning.
Winner: Raven- She won mainly because of her social connections, her 5 challenge wins, and her ability to stay alive whilst being targeted by arguably the most strategic player this season, Joey, which people respect, including Joey himself.
My Thoughts: This was a great season all-in-all, sure, without the write-ups I didn't get to show many of the characters as much as I wanted to (Vivianne, Raven, River, etc.) but I think this format will work well, and I will start with write-ups as soon as I can.
Possible Returnees: Raven, Vivianne, Joe, Joey, Louis, River, Leslie, Kendall, and Luna

2020.09.17 09:04 askgamblers-official 40 Best Songs of All Times About Poker, Dice, Cards and Addiction

40. Go Down Gamblin’ - Blood Sweat and Tears

Released in 1971, Go Down Gamblin’ by Blood Sweat and Tears is a song describing a gambler who is “born a natural loser.” He never wins, no matter what game he plays, but, he doesn’t feel like a loser. As the song goes – “Cause I've been called a natural lover by that lady over there, Honey, I'm just a natural gambler but I try to do my share.”

39. Gambler - Madonna

Gambler is a song written and played by Madonna, made for the film Vision Quest. Although the song reached the top 10 in the charts of the UK, Australia, Belgium, Ireland, Netherlands, and Norway, Madonna performed it only once on her 1985 The Virgin Tour. It’s a catchy song, we suggest you play it as you spin the reels of some of your favourite retro online slots.

38. The House of the Rising Sun - The Animals

Our list wouldn’t be complete without the 1964 hit song - The House of the Rising Sun by The Animals. Everybody knows the famous lines ”My mother, she was a tailor, sewed these new blue jeans, my father was a gamblin' man way down in New Orleans.” This single had a major success and made it to the top 10 songs on mainstream rock radio stations in the USA. Likewise, the hit was featured in the video game Guitar Hero Live.

37. The Winner Takes It All - ABBA

Whether we admit it or not, we all love at least some songs played by the very well-known Swedish pop group, ABBA. According to some sources, Bjorn Ulvaeus wrote the 1980 hit song The Winner Takes It All which was inspired by his divorce to his fellow band member, Agnetha Fältskog. The winner takes it all is a sort of a comparison to a divorce (especially the part ”I've played all my cards and that's what you've done too, nothing more to say, no more ace to play”), where one of them is the winner and the other one is left with nothing. And things are just the same when it comes to gambling, so we’ve decided to put the song on our list.

36. Shape of my Heart - Sting

We’re all aware of the fact that our gambling behaviour can be influenced by certain types of music and that's because online gambling and music go hand in hand. So, we suggest you start playing your preferred games with one of everyone’s favourite songs by Sting called The Shape of my Heart. It was released in 1993 and used for the end credits of the film Léon. In one of his interviews, Sting explained that the lyrics of the song tell the story of a card player who places bets not in order to win but to figure out something that’s been bothering him - “some kind of scientific, almost religious law.”

35. All I Wanna Do Is Play Cards - Corb Lund

Well, I guess I really oughta be makin up songs but all I wanna do is play cards. I know it's dumb and sick and wrong but all I wanna do is play cards. Got the studio booked in Tennessee, and my record producer's callin me, the tape will roll in just three weeks and all I wanna do is play cards.” Does it sound familiar? It’s a 2005 hit by Corb Lund called All I Wanna Do Is Play Cards, once you hear it you’ll be playing it on repeat.

34. Gambling Man - The Overtones

When you’re falling in love, it’s perfectly normal to feel like you want to gamble everything just to attract that person’s attention to notice you and love you back. Well, Gambling Man is a lively 2010 song that tells a story of a guy fascinated with his love, so he places all his bets on her, as the song goes - “I played my hand, I rolled the dice, now I'm paying for my sins, I got some bad addiction.” This time, he feels that this love affair is different from any other – “Baby, it's you, yeah, yeah, that's right.” The song was released in 2010 and has been popular ever since.

33. Poker Face - Lady Gaga

Although the Poker Face song is more about the game of romance rather than the game of poker, the catchy refrain that starts with “Can't read my, no he can't read my poker face” kinda reminds us of winning at the tables, so we couldn’t skip it this time. Released in 2008, the song achieved worldwide success, topping the charts in the USA, the UK, Australia, Canada and several European countries.

32. Little Queen of Spades - Robert Johnson

Moving on to the Little Queen of Spades, a song title by the American blues musician Robert Johnson who recorded the song in 1937 and first released it in 1938. The first version of this gambling-themed song has a playing time of 2:11, whereas the second one lasts 4s longer (2:15), and is considered an alternate take and first appeared on Johnson's album The Complete Recordings, in 1990.

31. Train of Consequences - Megadeth

Another great song Train of Consequences is the title created by Megadeth, released as the first single from their sixth studio album Youthanasia in 1994. The song was later included on their compilation albums and its music video was the 26th most played video on MTV. There’s this part of the song “No horse ever ran as fast as the money that you bet, I'm blowing on my cards and I play them to my chest” – which is about a person’s gambling problem, who realises something’s wrong with this lifestyle, but it still hunts him down. Could be just the thrill, but he just can’t stop playing.

30. Gambler - Whitesnake

Released on the album Slide It In (1984) and appearing on the compilation album Gold (2006), Gambler is the song by the British hard rock band Whitesnake. These words may sound familiar - “No fame or fortune, no luck of the draw, when I dance with the Queen of Hearts, a jack of all trades, a loser in love, it's tearing my soul apart”. And in case you’ve never heard it, we think you should give it a shot, the chances are you’re going to love it!

29. Gambling Man - Woody Guthrie

Now here’s one single from 1957 - Gamblin' Man. The song was taped live at the London Palladium and published as a double A side, with Puttin' On the Style. Reaching #1 in the UK Singles Chart in the summer 1957, it was “the last UK number 1 to be released on 78 rpm format only, as 7' vinyl had become the norm by this time.” Written by Woody Guthrie and Donegan, this gambling themed song was produced by Alan Freeman and Michael Barclay.

28. Roll of the Dice - Bruce Springsteen

According to Songfacts, Roll of the Dice was the first Springsteen’s song he didn’t write by himself. In fact, E Street Band’s pianist Roy Bittan helped with the music, while Springsteen was in charge of the lyrics, starting with – “Well I've been a losin' gambler, just throwin' snake eyes, Love ain't got me downhearted. I know up around the corner lies, My fool's paradise in just another roll of the dice.” After he broke up the E Street Band in October 1989, Springsteen wrote lyrics for the Roll of the Dice (with two other songs) and liked them to the point where he began writing and recording more songs.

27. Queen of Diamonds - Tom Odell

Here’s one song about a gambling fanatic who’s trying to satisfy his own addiction but also someone else, hoping it’s going to save him. Released in 2018, Queen of Diamonds is Tom Odell’s song from the album Jubilee Road, based on the local characters that inspired this British songwriter to include the whisky-soaked gamblers who regularly visited one betting shop.

26. The Angel and the Gambler - Iron Maiden

Now, this song may divide Iron Maiden fans and it’s most probably because of its repetitive lyrics that can be a bit annoying. The release we’re talking about is The Angel and the Gambler. Truth be told, the melody in general is very catchy and, even a bit similar to The Who in some moments. As the song was released in 1998 while Blaze Bayley was its frontmen, it’s missing the well-known high-pitch vocals from Bruce Dickinson.

25. Ramblin' Gamblin Man - Bob Seger

We’re moving on to a rock single from 1978 - Ramblin' Gamblin Man by Bob Seger. The author meets an old acquaintance, a professional gambler who happens to be a swagger. As such, he attracts people’s attention whenever he bets. Putting so much of his faith in the cards (rather than in people), he walks away every time, just before avoiding loss. Along the way, the narrator realises that, if you scratch beneath the surface, you’ll find he’s a very cynical man, who will never change.
Another gambling-themed song worth mentioning by Bob Seger is Still The Same.

24. Blow Up The Pokies - The Whitlams

Blow up the Pokies is the next song on our list, played by The Whitlams. It is the second single by the group from their 4th studio album, Love This City. Released in the year 2000, the song became a hit and made it to number 21 on the ARIA Singles Chart. According to several resources, the lyrics written by singer Tim Freedman were inspired by the destruction he saw in original Whitlams bassist Andy Lewis's life, due to his gambling addiction.

23. A Good Run of Bad Luck - Clint Black

Now here’s one 1994-song packed with gambling-related terms. As you listen to A Good Run of Bad Luck, recorded by American music artist Clint Black, you'll have a bit of fun as you try identifying what all these gambling terms mean. The song is a bit fast and is about falling in love by using gambling metaphors. The main character is willing to spend a lot of money to win his special lady over and, although he has had a period of bad luck, he is not giving up – “I've been to the table, and I've lost it all before, I'm willin' and able, always comin' back for more.

22. When You’re Hot, You’re Hot - Jerry Reed

Jerry Reed won a Grammy for the song When You’re Hot, You’re Hot which was released in 1971. Most people remember it as it was a major hit, ranked as number 1 in the country charts, also making its way up the Pop Top 40. It’s an enjoyable novelty song about the ups and downs of the gambling life, about one’s winning streak caught in an illegal game of Crap.
Country star Jerry Reed also came up with a version The Uptown Poker Club in 1973.

21. Lawyers, Guns and Money - Warren Zevon

Next one up - Lawyers, Guns and Money is a song by Warren Zevon, the closing track on his album Excitable Boy, released in 1978. An edited version of this song was distributed as a single and found itself on the A Quiet Normal Life best of compilation on the CD and LP. The song goes like this - “I went home with a waitress the way I always do, how was I to know she was with the russians, too? I was gambling in Havana, I took a little risk Send lawyers, guns, and money Dad, get me out of this, hiyah!

20. The Lottery Song - Harry Nilsson

According to the man in the 1972 pop-rock song The Lottery Song by Harry Nilsson, there's more than one way to get to Vegas. Addressing his lover, the narrator mentions a few different options for buying a ticket and going to Sin City – “We could win the lottery we could go to Vegas,” and “We could wait till summer, we could save our money” as well as “We could make a record, sell a lot of copies, we could play Las Vegas.”

19. Casino Queen - Wilco

Now here’s one black-humoured gambling-themed song, released in 1995 and titled after a casino. Featuring a dirty electric guitar, Casino Queen was composed by an American songwriter, Jeff Tweedy, who wrote this song after playing a game in a riverboat casino accompanied by his dad. Inspired by the event, the author wrote: “Casino Queen my lord you're mean, I've been gambling like a fiend on your tables so green.

18. Have a Lucky Day - Morphine

Another song on our list that you simply must check out starts like this: “I feel lucky, I just feel that way, I'm on a bus to Atlantic City later on today. Now I'm sitting at a blackjack table and swear to God the dealer has a tag says, "Mabel." Hit me, hit me! I smile at Mabel, soon they're bringing complimentary drinks to the table.” Check it out yourself - it’s called Have a Lucky Day by Morphine.

17. Kentucky Gambler - Merle Haggard

Written by Dolly Parton and released in 1974, Merle Haggard’s Kentucky Gambler is another song on our ultimate gambling playlist that you should pay attention to. It’s about a miner from Kentucky who leaves his family to gamble, under the bright lights of Reno. Unsurprisingly, his winning streak comes to an end, and he loses all his winnings. All broke, he decided to return back home only when he arrived, he found out his wife was involved with someone else.

16. The Jack - AC/DC

The next song on our list will give you some adrenaline boost, for sure. It goes like this - “She gave me the queen, she gave me the king, she was wheelin' and dealin', just doin' her thing, she was holdin' a pair, but I had to try…” Sounds familiar? This song from the 1975s is called The Jack and is played by AC/DC and there’s no way you can skip it.

15. Blackjack - Ray Charles

Moving on to something a bit different - a melody that blackjack lovers can listen to as they play is Ray Charles’ Blackjack. Apart from being a good quality song from 1955, it carries an important message with an emphasis on how brutal the game of blackjack can be. Some sources say that Ray Charles wrote it after beating T-Bone Walker at a blackjack game session.
Yet another Ray Charles’ famous song about gambling is called a Losing Hand.

14. Ooh Las Vegas - Gram Parson

Ooh, Las Vegas, ain't no place for a poor boy like me”... is a song-into for Ooh Las Vegas which was written by Gram Parsons and Ric Grech. It was first released by Gram Parsons with Emmylou Harris in 1974. Playing this song would be perfect for the beginning of the road trip (i.e. to Las Vegas), especially if you have the energy to sing along.

13. The Stranger - Leonard Cohen

Published in 1968 and performed by Leonard Cohen, The Stranger appears in the The Ernie Game movie about a man released from a mental asylum. More appropriately, it is the perfect opening song in the 1971 Western McCabe & Mrs Miller, in which Warren Beatty plays a gambler. As you listen to this song (without watching the movie), it makes you see fascinating images of card games, smoky dreams, and concepts of risk versus safety.

12. Desperado - Eagles

Written by Glen Frey and Don Henley, Desperado song is one of The Eagles’ greatest hits from their 1973 album of the same name. The song features a classic tune while the ballad tells the story of a lone wolf imprisoned by his loneliness. As for the lyrics, they have loads of card references mentioning the queen of diamonds, the queen of hearts, and so on.

11. Huck's Tune - Bob Dylan

The next song on our list is about the risks of poker, money, and relationships, which are precisely what the movie Lucky You is all about. Does it ring a bell? That’s right, this 2007 song is called Huck’s Tune and is performed by Bob Dylan. Each of us can all relate to lines "You push it all in, and you've no chance to win, you play 'em on down to the end." Play the song and you’ll enjoy more than 4 amazing minutes of Bob Dylan.
Likewise, Bob Dylan recorded Rambling, Gambling Willie and Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts, both excellent and both inspired by gambling.

10. Four Little Diamonds - Electric Light Orchestra

A song by the British rock band Electric Light Orchestra Four Little Diamonds was released in 1983 and found itself on the album Secret Messages. The single wasn’t so popular in the US, being only 2 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, at number 86, and number 84 in the UK. This song refers to the singer’s cheating lover who tricked him out of a ring which had 'four little diamonds' on it.

9. You Can't Beat The House - Mark Knopfler

Moving on to our next choice for the day, You Can’t Beat the House. It’s the third song on the Get Lucky studio album released in 2009 by British singer-songwriter and guitarist Mark Knopfler. The album and the songs received favorable reviews with the album reaching the top three positions on album charts in Denmark, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, and Poland. The singer’s divine voice combined with beautiful music and lyrics goes like this – “You can't bear the house, you can't bear the house, tell the man somebody, you can't beat the house.

8. Deck of Cards - Don Williams

Deck of Cards is a recitation song that tells the story of a soldier who gets caught while playing cards in church and then faces a sentence from a superior officer. The soldier defends his case, explaining he wasn't about to deal a hand of poker, but was rather confirming his faith with the cards. Performed by T. Texas Tyler, the song managed to become a major hit in the 1940s and 1950s. Also, Wink Martindale had an even bigger hit with his 1959 cover, with a successful version by Don Williams featuring Tex Ritter and Buddy Cole.

7. Gambler’s Blues - B.B. King

First recording of the song Gambler’s Blues by B.B. King was in 1966, and it was released in 1967. The song appears on the album Back in the Alley (1970). Some say gambling and blues go hand in hand, so if you (gambling fans) haven’t heard it, listen and see for yourself.

6. Tumbling Dice - Rolling Stones

One of our favourite songs on the list is Tumbling Dice, written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. It tells the story of a gambler who can’t remain faithful to any woman. Being released in the 1970s and featuring a blues boogie-woogie rhythm, the song was and still is one of the greatest singles of all time.
Rolling Stones also recorded Casino Boogie, and it’s from their 1972 album, Exile on Main St.

5. Luck Be A Lady - Frank Sinatra

The next song on our list is about a gambler who hopes that he will win a bet, the outcome of which will decide whether he is able to save his relationship with the girl of his dreams. You probably know what song we’re talking about; it’s called Luck be a Lady released in 1965 and performed by one of the most popular musical artists - Frank Sinatra.

4. Deal - Grateful Dead

Next one up is the song Deal. It was first performed by the Grateful Dead in 1971, as a regular part of the repertoire through their 1970's tour. Although being less common to the fans during the 1990s, the band continued to perform it. The singer opens with the message: “Since it cost a lot to win and even more to lose you and me bound to spend some time wondering what to choose,” that later kicks off with a chorus: “Don't let your deal go down...
Loser is another song first performed by the Grateful Dead in 1971 as well, heavily played during 1971 and 1972.

3. Ace of Spades - Motörhead

Ok, the next song is loaded with some great gambling verses like "The pleasure is to play, makes no difference what you say, I don't share your greed, the only card I need is the Ace of Spades" will definitely set you in the right mood for hitting some winning combinations. Released in 1980, the song was inspired by slot machines that the lead singer Ian Fraser “Lemmy” Kilmister played in London pubs.

2. Viva Las Vegas - Elvis

As soon as you start playing the second song from our playlist “Viva Las Vegas,” you’ll probably picture a huge casino and a great gaming atmosphere. Performed by the legendary Elvis Presley, the 1964-released song brings the glamour of the city, and its beat will get you in the mood for some serious gameplay. This song was written for the movie of the same name starring Elvis Presley, in which he plays a race car driver waiting tables at a hotel to pay off a debt. There’s this famous scene when he performs this song at the talent competition alongside many showgirls.

1. The Gambler - Kenny Rogers

Performed by the legendary country singer Kenny Rogers, The Gambler song is our number 1 - it's full of some betting advice that are relevant today, even though it was released more than 40 years ago, in 1978. Here’s how it goes… “If you're gonna play the game, boy you gotta learn to play it right, you've got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away, and know when to run.” These classic chorus lines were told from the first-person perspective inspired by a conversation the author had with an experienced poker player on a train. Written in the form of poker metaphors, Schlitz wrote the tune in honor of his late father.
Johnny Cash is also among other musicians who recorded The Gambler in 1978, on Gone Girl.

What do you think? Which one is your favourite?

2020.09.16 20:55 Lesagesinging Talent agencies for singers in Las Vegas

Heya all,
I recently moved to Las Vegas. I'm grasping at straws a bit to figure out the local music scene. I know that singing for money probably won't happen until covid is over, but I want to get a head start by understanding the local industry. I know BESTagency does a lot with singers, but are there any other agencies?

2020.09.16 01:44 ChiTownSounds Bi-Annual Breakups & more (long AF)

Doubt there's any advice anyone can give but who knows....
I've (41m) been with my girl (34f) since September 2012. We met thru Plenty of Fish. In the YEARS I used the app, she's literally the only girl I ever met. I was coming off a 10 year relationship breakup, followed by a 5 year gap in which I couldn't get a date or even just a little hanky panky. So I was feeling very UGLY, UNWANTED and DAMAGED. Her and I clicked quickly! She had a 6mo old little girl and she told me she hadn't had any "contact" since having the baby. Hangout Video chats turned into "playtime" almost every call. So when we met for the first time IN PERSON, we got busy in the back of the van! I can safely say I was fully in love with her within a couple weeks! Well, about 6 months in, I had plans to come see her but couldn't. I had no vehicle at the time and couldn't borrow one. About two or so hours later, I got a vehicle, so I left immediately without warning. I parked in front and knocked on the door but no answer. I look in the window and I THINK I see two people scurry past. I think nothing of it but I knock again knowing she's in there. She comes to the door in a bathrobe with NOTHING UNDERNEATH! My eyes lit up! She leads me to her room, takes my drinks to put them in the fridge and goes to the kitchen. But I notice, it's been a while and I thought I heard a bang outside. So go out the room and call her name but she's nowhere to be found. I look out the window of the front door and there is a guy, running to his car from the side of the house! I found my drinks sitting on a chair near the kitchen, grabbed them and headed out the front door. She comes running out standing in the car door begging me not to leave. She said she'd gone on a date with him earlier. That made me wonder about how easily she gives it up. That's all it took was dinner? I'd just give 5 years of being a perfect gentlemen but couldn't even get a hug! Needless to say, I pulled off, letting gravity close the passenger door as I drove off. She claimed she wasn't sure if we were exclusive yet or not. We were telling each other "I love you" so I figured that was enough to determine how exclusive we were. After talking for a week or so, I forgave her and tried to move past it.
Maybe about 6 more months later, she told me she was pregnant. Still worrying about the person she was and taking the advice of my mother, we aborted that child. Still pains me to this day but at the time, I'd not known her very long and didn't wanna tie myself to a stranger for the next 18 years! I thought it was the responsible thing to do at the time. It's def something that drew us closer together. Maybe about a year later tho, we broke up. I don't remember the exact reason for that breakup, but within two weeks, she was with someone else. I was hurt and fearful that my 5 year stint was gonna repeat. So I sought her out and "won" her back. She made all kinds of promises that I realize now, she never intended on keeping (like a threesome with dinner lesbian friends of hers) but I was just happy to have her back. I literally went to this guy's house while he was gone and moved her and her things out and into my place. Since I had just moved back to Florida from Atlanta in July 2012, I was staying with my mom.
Things were good for a while. For the next year and a half we raised her daughter and grew closer. Admittedly, during that time, I got some attention from some women at the bar and that boosted my confidence! So much, in fact, that I made the same mistake she did. I slept with someone else. She didn't have anywhere to go so she stayed living with me and we worked thru it. But sure enough, after about two years of being back together, she left me and within two weeks was moved in with someone else.... Again. She claimed I didn't want to do anything. I wasn't working and we were just kinda stuck here. So she'd sparked up something else and left. It was so quick, I accused her of staying that relationship before she left but she denied it. But after about 2-3 months, I reached out and we rekindled AGAIN. So, AGAIN, I went and moved her out of THIS guys house and back into mine.
Now we're 4 1/2 years in and 3 guys later. I'm working for Netflix now making good money. I eventually buy my first "new" car and things are GOOD! She starts working too but quits her first two jobs over coworkers. It's frustrating but her and her daughter are feeling like my little family now. After about 1.75 years and finally holding steady work, she got her tax return. And like magic, she takes that money and LEAVES! My mother had been putting pressure on us to pay her more money and sent me a message basically saying "y'all need to go". So instead of giving her money out of the tax check like was planned, she took it and bounced. That pissed my mom off! She moved in with a friend for about a week but was moved in with and dating a coworker within two weeks. 🙄 Again. Just like last time, it happened so fast it's hard to believe that something wasn't being developed while we were still together. But because mom said WE had to go, I had nowhere to go so I moved back to Atlanta with my cousin. Weeks later, we decided to move to Vegas. He's a singe talented singer and I'd been working on him and his career since we were 18! Being in Vegas was lonely. Especially since I was always arguing with my cousin over little bullshit things. Me and his BF (YES, he's gay) were each other's support group since he's so difficult to deal with, and he didn't like that we talked about him so it caused friction. So I moved out of the RV we drove to Vegas and into a weekly rental place. Uber eats was just enough work to keep a roof over my head. But driving all day, in a city with no friends and always by myself, I couldn't help but miss her. We were SO GOOD when things were good and I felt if we tried ONE MORE TIME it could work. So I reached out. You know what happened next.
I couldn't move her out of this guy's house personally like before but she gathered all her things and her and my stepdaughter MOVED to Vegas from Florida! This was IT! NOBODY in our relationship. Only have each other! Our own place. This was the best it had ever been! I mean, even tho I still had my worries, this was the strongest our bond had ever been! Nothing could stop us! I was only doing Uber eats tho and it wasn't cutting it anymore. She got a job thru a neighbor at the weekly and began passing the weekly rent. Her mom decided she wanted to come too and drove my girls car (that I bought for her) from Florida to Vegas to come help us. She brought a family member with her. That was the first in a comedy of errors that proceeded. Her and my girls mom got to fighting almost immediately. She was going thru her own breakup, and just was begging a bitch to everyone. So my girls mom arranged with the weekly place to switch rooms. We move into the one bedroom with mom and she moves into the studio me and my "family" lived in. That was a Sunday. That Tuesday, she took my girls car and drove off in a rage over a fight and showed back up, car wrecked, saying somebody hit her and ran. Then two days later called an Uber, put all her clothes in a black trash bag and moved back to Florida with her ex. He'd been cheating but still bought her a plane ticket back. Leaving us with the payment on my old room which was still in my name. Exactly what I feared and even voiced that fear. 🙄
Thanksgiving comes and my girl is laid off. My car was in dire need of brakes, But instead of fixing the car, I used the $100 advance the Uber card gave me to make sure we have food and gifts for Christmas. I couldn't drive for two weeks cause I had no money for gas to get out and earn money. Her mom had money coming soon but I had to wait till then and ask for a full tank to go work. During that time, her mom got the idea in her head that I DON'T WANNA WORK and began doggin me to my girl. One week later she was on a plane to Florida and already had a place lined up to move into. There goes the help and a waste of money and resources. Since I couldn't Uber and I had no income, I was talking to my cousin again cause somebody GAVE him a restaurant on Las Vegas Blvd and he needed help getting it up and running properly. So I dedicated all my time to helping my cousin in hopes that it was the big payday I'd dreamed of since I was 18. My girl had gotten rehired at the job that laid her off so we were good on rent again now that the holidays were over. But we were behind, way behind. Her mom leaving put us in a hole that lasted months. We paid late fees every week cause every week we were paying for the previous week. We were blessed to have had the property manager work with us the way he did or we'd have been on the streets new years day! I was trying to make money but there was no money in a restaurant that nobody patronises. Try as we may, we just never made enough money to be paid, only buy food for they next day. That lasted all of a couple months before I had to take A REAL JOB. My girls boss offered me a janitorial position to come work with them and I took it. I tried doing both but I physically couldn't handle it. The new job started at 5am and I was at the restaurant every night past midnight with an hour walk home! So I told him I needed to go work. He seemed cool about it until I didn't show up for a week out of sheer exhaustion.
I should've learned my lesson about allowing people into our relationship but, c'mon, it's me were talking about. Her baby's father, whom I never had a problem with nor was he ever somebody I had to worry about her going back to, wanted to come "help" and in turn, help his daughter. School was about to start and with both of us working a 5am to 1pm job, we kinda needed help! He's disabled from a bad accident and wanted to use whatever benifits he got to help us and at the same time develop a relationship with his daughter. He has a bunch of kids and no relationship with ANY of them and looked at this as his last chance to have one. He was getting a monthly check, he had help to offer, so I agreed to let him come but on the caveat that he get his own place ASAP since he was qualifed for the government to give him one.
5 mins. No exaggeration... It took five minutes from the moment he walked in the door for him to start arguing with her about something petty. And for the next couple weeks, I spent my weekends "talking him off the ledge" about how shitty his life was and how he wanted to die. He didn't like the neighborhood we were in cause there was a lot of homeless nearby, but we'd learned to live with it. Then he starts on me. I don't know he was bipolar before he moved in but I figured it out very quickly. I overheard him tell his daughter that he moved to Vegas to "show you what a man looks like cause, Bibi isn't one". I'm Bibi cause that's how she pronounced Billy. I was heated. I was ready to beat his ass and put him out with the homeless. That's when we uncovered a ploy by him, my girls dad and my girls sister to KIDNAP my stepdaughter and take her back to Florida cause they didn't think she belonged in Vegas and wasn't happy. We called the cops immediately! Omfg, really? Luckily the job let me work a split shift. I stayed home to put my stepdaughter on the bus and then went to work. She was home by time the bus arrived and would walk her home cause we didn't want him to intercept and take her away.
All of this, as bad as it is, pulled is together tighter. We both got promoted at the job. We finally paid up on time and got to where we didn't owe late fees anymore. I'd see him from time to time when I'd pass on the bus home but that was it. He wasn't allowed on the property. Money was building up and the next tax check that came was gonna really set us up! But it was also the two year marker. Every two years we'd breakup. Right around tax time. So yes, a part of me was anxious. But things were great! We'd just had another Christmas and this one was without the bullshit. My stepdaughter got every gift she wanted. We felt accomplished as parents! Life was GOOD!
At the job, we'd made some friends. I knew guys were trying her, but I trusted her to handle her business properly. And as far as I could tell, she did. I didn't like how the guy who sold us bud was always in her phone but shrugged it off. I TRUSTED HER. THINGS WERE GREAT! She'd befriended a 21yo girl that drove the forklift. They worked closely so she would give my girl a ride home and they'd blaze. We exchanged gifts with her for Christmas, gave her advice about the multiple guys she was fucking (two worked with us) and even spoke of getting a place together, the 3 of us. Somewhere along the way, she told my girl something and thought she had repeated it on the floor at work. So she asked me if she could get MY opinion. Since I'm a guy and "think like them". I realize NOW why that is wrong, but at the time, I thought I was just giving the same friendly advice I had previously. I had no intentions of anything extra and neither did she. But, for the sake of not causing a problem, we had those conversations in Snapchat so they would delete immediately. This carried on for about 3 weeks when suddenly my girl gets very suspicious. My phone and social media had always been accessable cause I didn't have anything to hide. She goes in my phone and she sees a message from me that says "it's all gravy, baby" and took it ALL THE WAY TOO LEFT FIELD. I said it cause it rhymed, not cause she was my "baby". So the next day, my girl confronts her AT WORK and shit hits the fan! I hear what happened before I even got to work! When she saw me and tried to confront me, I told her EVERYTHING. Right there on the spot. Yes, we'd been talking bout about her and these other guys. Something she was fully aware of. I mean, this girl was fucking TWO at work but still hung up on her ex that had a kid with someone else 4 years into their 8 year relationship! I didn't want to get involved in that MESS! But at this point, my girl thinks we fucked but she just can't prove it. Why am I so dumb tho... Cause a couple days later, she posted A BUTT NAKED picture of herself on Snapchat. In the middle of arguing with my girl, I see the pic but don't wanna stare. I wanted to see! She had a decent body! So I screenshot the picture. I had little experience with Snapchat so I didn't know she gets notification that I did that. Well, that night, my girl goes in my phone and what does she find? 🙄 Fuck, now it looks worse. But knowing what I was actually doing and knowing that she was wrong, I became "a dick" and was more mad at her for embarrassing me at work in front of everyone. She accused me and immediately quit, so she didn't have to see anyone at work again!
The tax check was gonna be there any day now and at this point we've had it out with each other and brought up all our old injuries. Told her things I'd thought of but never said out loud, like the fact that she got a "Bonnie and Clyde" tattoo with one of the guys she left me for and had wings put on another for her first BF... and that it bothered me and sometimes slowed me sexually. Her mom had recently been diagnosed and told her she was "dying". I thought it was just another ploy by her family to get my stepdaughter back to Florida. So after I calmed down some, I suggested maybe she take the tax check and come back till her mom passed. She thought I was just trying to get rid of her. She took a weekend and came back to talk to her mom and that weekend sent my stepdaughter back to Florida. I lost it. I spent the next couple weeks dying slowly. This isn't what I wanted but I'd said some mean shit when I was mad. So she was set to go back to Florida and I was gonna stay. I wanted to try something long distance but she said "3 weeks and I'll have moved on from you", there was no saving it. Then I got fired for "leaving out the wrong door" at work. 🙄 Them bitches at the temp agency just didn't like me. Now I'm without work. , With no recourse, I decided to leave with her. We went out to dinner and spent that last month in Vegas like a couple, but as soon as we got back, she ghosted.
Turns out she'd started taking to someone back in Florida before we left and was already in something two weeks within getting back... Sound familiar? I didn't know it at the time. We got back to town AS COVID HIT! Literally got here and everything shut down. I stayed with a friend but no work meant I had to go, quickly. Mom allowed me to come back even tho she was upset at the way things ended two years before. I spent every waking moment trying to get her back.... Again. There was a guy (another guy) in her Facebook trying hard and I told him to back off. That upset her so she blocked me. She was already dating this other guy and had a second guy trying hard. I thought that was it! For the next 3 months, when the phone bill was due, instead of splitting it up, she remained on my account. That led to us talking more.
She was staying at her sisters and HATED IT! As you can imagine, with all the past I mentioned, that family is HARD to deal with. I begged and begged until finally she said "if we do this, it has to be done right!" So I put my tail between my legs and begged my mom to let her come back. She reluctantly agreed and they moved in June 17th. I bought my brother's used car and spent every penny of my stimulus check to get things right for US. She stated the weekend with her mom for the Fourth. I hated it cause it didn't feel right. So a week later, I go in her phone and what do I find. Messages to him about making it thru this and finally being together. She'd spent the Forth with HIM. THAT SHOULD BE THE END, RIGHT? No, I tell her, "look, now we both have something to make up for, let's use this to move forward." Then the weekend of Aug 19 she went to stay with her mom again to take her to an appointment in the morning. Why the need to stay the night? So I drive there in the middle of the night and find that my car isn't there. She took my car, left me with her kid and went and fucked this other dude.... Again... For the second time since moving hey back in June 17th.
SO WHY IS THIS GIRL STILL HERE? WHY DO I ALLOW THIS SHIT TO HAPPEN TO ME? There's some truth to the fact that, I'm getting older and still want at least one more kid. But that's not the MAIN reason I don't want her to go. It's the little things. Besides being a fucking LAIR everything else is great. Cooks, cleans, sucks, fucks, takes care of me! Starting over means I won't have one until I'm 45+ and that's just too far away. But do I wanna have kids with this girl? Can I trust this girl? I know that answer... But here I am, 10 heartbreaks later still chasing this girl. If I didn't fear being alone for the rest of my life, I might have left long ago.
Sorry, spent hours writing this and now she's home from work. So I kinda ended it abruptly, but that's where I'm at. There's a trust being built again. Neither of us have Facebook anymore. I also have her phone code to check it whenever, but if you delete it right away... 🤷🏽‍♂️ I dunno... Mostly venting cause I have NOBODY to talk to about it. All my friends and family are sick of hearing it. NOBODY knows that last part about caring her cheating TWICE since being back... I know what they'd say. 😭
Sorry it's so long, but that's my last 8 years of life in a nutshell!

2020.09.11 13:48 jensyao over-analyzing Nas lines outside the scope of rapgenius: Jay ft Nas - Success

When Nas overthinks his lyrics, we overanalyze...that's just part of the game we play as listeners when deciphering Nas' lyrics:
I'll paint a brief picture with this one...again, when the verses were recorded for 2007, none of this had happened, so this is why this is outside the scope and a preview of things to come
On Jay's American Gangster album, Nas said:
  • But I don't give a fuck, walk inside the lion's den...Up your catalog, dog, mine's worth too much/Like Mike Jacks ATV pub, Mottola can't touch
The original annotation says:
Nas is bragging about how much his catalog of songs is worth, comparing it to Michael Jackson’s ATV Music Publishing (owner of The Beatles‘ songs and others). The 'Mottola can’t touch’ refers to an incident in 2001 when Sony Music Entertainment, headed by Tommy Mottola, unsuccessfully tried to take all of Jackson’s music rights
Sony is also the parent company of Columbia Records, Nas' old label. He could be saying that, like MJ, Tommy Mottola can’t touch his publishing either. Whether or not this boast is true remains to be seen…
Owning your publishing and owning your masters are two different things, with publishing being more lucrative. Master rights typically belong to either the artist(s), record label, recording studio, or any other party who financed the recording. Publishing rights belong to the owner of the actual music composition.
Michael Jackson had so much money that he bought many cataloges in his lifetime: the Beatles, Sly and the Family Stone, Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff, Ray Charles, Elvis Presley, and Aretha Franklin.
Eminem is known to get into his Slim Shady persona as a single to launch is upcoming album with "my name is" for "slim shady LP", "The Real Slim Shady" for "marshal mather's LP", "Without Me" for "The Eminem Show", "Just Lose It" for "Encore", onward etc, because causing controversy gets free publicity for the album. Eminem for "just lose it" made fun of Michael Jackson's alleged pedophilia but in the music video, Eminem was explicitly warned not to portray that but instead made fun of Michael Jackson's hair catching on fire for the pepsi commercial and his nose. Michael Jackson got pissed and bought the publishing to eminem's back catalog so whenever Eminem decides to make music, Micheal Jackson gets paid...this is how you settle beef on the business side, you don't make a diss record for them to respond back, you buy their publishing so they work for you...this demotivation and Proof dying just made Eminem take a leave of absence from rap in 2006. People from the black community still look up to Michael Jackson and when he made those moves, people paid attention.
When eminem was set to come back in 2009 with his lead singles 3AM/We Made You to start off his album, Michael Jackson mysteriously died later that same year....How is it that singers who own their master's like MJ, whitney houston, and Prince die so mysteriously? and then some record publishing company quietly takes a stake in their publishing years later? MJ was the first to die unexpectedly because MJ owned the masters to other people as well, and then came Whitney in 2012, and then Prince in 2016....
OK, let's take a tangent to talk about the record industry and record executives...they are egotistical, maniacal, and power hungry cut throat entities....when sound recording was invented in 1860 and slavery was abolished in 1865, blacks had to find work any way possible and some of them migrated up north to detroit to join the auto industry. Other stayed in their cities...Record labels saw black talent and paid them next to nothing where before there was color TV, you could only hear the voices, so black acts had to sound white for white bands to lipsync and cover their music for the music to have universal appeal because of their complexion. Because the record industry started and capitalized on literally ex-slave labor, the deals were horrendous from the beginning, because the labels and the record executives owns the lion share of the profits and the artist get paid enough to keep making music but remain relatively poor...they get paid in "fame points" like reddit/genius authors get paid in "internet points".
You don't hear about record executives unless they make significant think suge knight was cut throat? At least suge knight was vocal about his actions. the record executives like Tommy Mottola was once married to Mariah Carey but when Mariah divorced him, Mottola did everything in his power to sabotage Mariah's career and if it wasn't for Mariah's talents and her appeal to the r&b community, her career might have folded with Mottola's influence driven by revenge and obsession. As the original annotation says, Mottola unsuccessfully tried to take Jackson's publishing rights back to Sony, which is also a parent to Columbia, Nas' label at the time. Mottola basically took a then industry plant Jennifer Lopez and pit her against Mariah Carey by trying to appeal to the r&b market to the point of using the same samples to sabotage Mariah Carey's singles. JLo has many times where she was caught lipsyncing to other singer's vocals, most notably Ashanti's, for I'm Real remix, and most of her collaborations with murder inc...on some songs, it obviously doesn't even sound like JLo was singing, such as Get Right...and this was all for Mottola to get back at Mariah for their divorce because every time Mariah is trying to release an album or staging her comeback, JLo somehow comes out lipsyncing to another ghost singer's hit record around the same time.
In addition, Jimmy Iovine, the head of interscope, was infamously associated for calling the Feds to raid Murder Inc's offices with their association with drug trafficker Supreme so that Ja Rule could not respond to 50 Cent's diss on "Back down" due to the Fed's monitoring their actions until a full year was passed with "Clap Back" because Ja Rule was a huge artist at the time and Jimmy Iovine needed extra insurance that the new artist 50 Cent was to win his beef with Ja Rule. Jimmy was quoted that he was a business man who will snitch if it is to his advantage in front of 50 Cent in 50 Cent's new book, Hustle Harder, Hustle Smarter. What make Iovine relevant in this situation is that the Shady imprint was held under Interscope, and Iovine was probably pulling some puppet strings to get Eminem's catalog out the grasp and influence of MJ's possession and his top money maker Eminem who crosses over into mainstream audience into White America need to be incentivized to work for the record labels to earn more money.
Basically, record labels and record executives are the puppet master of things that move behind the scenes of why some artists get a lot of funding and others' career fold unexpectedly. Their seek for control for publishing rights and 360 deals is how also people who own their masters die unexpectedly and the label then quietly recoup the master's years how Sony finally acquires MJ's publishing through his estate years later in 2018 with no fanfare or announcement because back when MJ was alive in 2001, Mottola tried but failed, which is what Nas was referring to.
OK, now back to Nas and Jay. In 1996, Jay sampled Nas on Dead Presidents and he wanted Nas to redo the vocals because the clean acapella removed the f-word for "I'm out for dead fucking presidents to represent me" for Jay to sample, but Nas was big at the time and didn't want to cosign a rapper without a record out. Only in the Q-tip remix and later in the 10th anniversary remixes does Nas drop the f-word on that dead presidents line. Nas does not use the f-word on the original Illmatic version of 'The World Is Yours'...this also is deep because Nas said that Dead Presidents' line in 1994 for "the world is yours q-tip remix", and in 1995 comes out a movie called Dead Presidents....and Jay was strategic with dropping Dead Presidents I and II as a single to match the movie's title but the single is not associated with the movie....hey where have we seen this move again? Jay did the same thing for American Gangster in 2008 as he did for Dead Presidents in 1996....He named his album/single after a movie for free promotion as an unofficial soundtrack/single where he was inspired by and piggy backed on that name for the album to carry more weight because the movie industry did more of the advertising for the same title and people would confuse Jay's CD for the official soundtrack. Back in 1996, Jay did this for his single instead of a whole album.
When Jay threw a jab at Nas at summer jam, Nas dropped H to the omo freestyle on rakim's paid in full beat and got Rakim's blessing, and nas said "I count off when you sampled my voice"...Jay responded to those lyrics and completed his Nas verse on Takeover by saying "You made it a hot line, I made it a hot song...I know who I paid, God–Serchlite Publishing". Jay owned his master's at Rocafella and Nas didn't but now Nas does with Mass Appeal records with his recent projects and somehow, Jay is in a 360 deal with Live nation but still owns his master's...when Takeover dropped, people were praising Jay for his bars where you had to think about what he was saying when he paid Serchlite Publishing to sample Nas because owning your master's and publishing was not big in Hip Hop at the time and Jay used his business savvy to claim superiority over Nas. And Nas came back on his verse for "Success" by saying that nobody can touch his publishing because he catalog is too expensive, almost as a jab back at Jay for sampling his voice that easily, and you had to think about that bar for the sake of who owns whose publishing, and mind you, Nas did his response jab when featured on a Jay-Z track, so whenever they perform it together, Jay gets to hear it live every time
With that stage set, let the publishing ownership games begin...2Pac infamously dissed Jay on "Fuck Friendz" released posthumously among other songs like the original version of 'Hit Em Up' and 'Watch Yo Mouth' and Jay had to pay 2Pac's estate when Kanye made the same beat for '03 Bonnie and Clyde' off 'Me and My Girlfriend'....when 2Pac's mother unexpectedly died in 2016, this was another mysterious death because she held the publishing rights to 2Pac with Amaru Records and she was primed to release another 2Pac album but it kept on delaying because of the poor reception to "Pac's Life's" singles/collaborations and some fans did not like Eminem's interpretation of 2Pac music either on "Loyal to the Game", where eminem wasn't an apt producer because he had to speed up 2Pac's vocals to fit the tempo of the instrumental and butchered 2Pac's voice to shout out G-unit and Jadakiss, when they weren't even on 2Pac's radar when he was alive. With 8 years of not releasing another 2Pac album or a documentary/soundtrack to commemorate 2Pac to generate money, there was also money mismanagement, where they were going to build a 2Pac Amaru institute in Georgia but the funding to that construction collapsed. Afeni Shakur had a suspicious death as well, where finally 2Pac's estate was up for auction without anybody blocking it to the point that 2Pac's car that he got shot in in Las Vegas was also put up for auction.
So Roc Nation and Jay Z ended up buying 2Pac's publishing for $385 million, realize that 2Pac's catalog is huge with his work ethic and he has a ton of unreleased songs, where they had the intention to drop another 2Pac album yet still to release. “We’ve purchased one of Hip-Hops greatest icons music which would make us one of the largest record labels in the world. We have a plan set in motion to release a new Tupac album in 2016 titled, ‘And Now I Rise’ which will feature Snoop Dogg (Snoop Lion), Drake, Nas, The Dream, DMX, Beyonce and of course Jay-Z. The album will be produced by Dr. Dre and Timbaland.” Again, people pay attention, it's no coincidence that this all happened. Jay brought MJ to summer jam and dissed Nas in 2001. Mottola unsuccessfully tried to buy MJ's catalog in 2001 for Sony but Sony eventually did in 2018...If you go by the way MJ handled Eminem, he didn't make songs to diss Eminem for making fun of him, MJ bought his catalog and that is how you really win beefs. So Jay bought 2Pac's catalog as a business move but also as a score to settle for being dissed by 2Pac. And what did Jay do with 2Pac's catalog? Nothing but sit on it and sometimes clear samples for other artists but that's new 2Pac verses or songs/albums any time soon, and it's been 4 years since the announcement? It's not like a Jay Electronica situation where we had to motivate the artist to create the songs...2Pac's vocals have already been laid and it's up to the producer to recreate the instrumentals and match them with the correct collaborations. It was more of a business move and an ego trip for Jay to win that silent war he's been having with 2Pac's estate and to finally get rid of that chip off his shoulders more than anything.
I hope you understand how big of a chip Jay-Z still thinks he got on his shoulders...he has an unreleased diss record for 2Pac that he performed once live at the Apollo where the track never resurfaced out of respect of 2Pac's death. He bought 2Pac's catalog so whatever Jay sampled from 2Pac goes back into Jay's pockets because Death Row was still not cool with Jay-Z at the time when Jay did 03 Bonnie and Clyde and Jay had to give away a lot of royalties to Death row for that song for him to remake it, and then Death row released Fuck Friendz, which dissed Jay-Z on track number 2 posthumously in 2001.
and Nas literally went into "the Lion's Den" when he signed to Def Jam when Jay was the label's president in 2006 and also he when he went on Jay's home turf when being featured on Jay's album for the first time in 2007 and dropped knowledge and bars out-rapping Jay on his own song. Why do you think Jay and Nas only perform Dead Presidents and The world is yous together? They barely perform Black Republicans and they almost never perform Success, where Jay also bit off Eminem on that same song...."I used to give a fuck, now I give a fuck less/What do I think of success? It sucks, too much stress/I guess I blew up quick/'Cause friends I grew up with"...that is an eminem line from "I'm Back"....."I used to give a – fuck, now I could give a fuck less/What do I think of suc-cess/It sucks, too much press I’m stressed/Too much cess, depressed, too upset/It’s just too much mess, I guess I must just blew up quick"....And Nas dissed Jay-Z on Ether for saying that "Eminem murdered you on your own shit" and now when you're finally collaborating with Nas, you start off your first verse biting Eminem to keep up with Nas? "my own flows are foolish" as Jay said on "what more can i say" when he was originally accused of biting Big as a response to mostly Nas' diss on Ether "how much of biggie's rhymes are gonna come out your fat lips?" and now Eminem?...yeah, about that, right?
So, present year. Nas drops King's Disease, where the symptoms most describes Jay, where Jay is in the position of a king but still have insecurities, like you can take jay out the hood but can't take the hood out of jay. If you read beyond the lyrics, the message was not for most listeners because most listeners have yet to rise to that position of King, which is why some critics aren't vibing with're missing the point. The album's message is mostly directed at Jay, where if you go to my reddit timeline link of Jay's and Nas' beef, the timeline still have remnants of subtle jabs til this day, from insecurities and jealousies, to sabotaging release days, to limiting the time Nas has to write his verse before Jay had to turn it in so that Jay doesn't get murdered on his own track by Nas if Nas was given enough time to craft a better verse, to jabs in the title, etc.
Look, Nas had to write his verse for Success at 4AM in the morning in Canada after a show because Jay had to turn it in. Nas was clearly at a disadvantage to complete his verse and yet he still murdered his verse. That was a subtle limited time sabotage Jay did to Nas and Jay did it again for Nas' feature on BBC.
The point is, Nas on King's disease was asking why does do people want to kill Nas when he said "Can I floss without you wanting me outlined in chalk?" on the title track. As mentioned with the recent music related mysterious deaths, they all point to people owning the rights to their master's...MJ, Whitney, Prince, 2Pac's mother...and who else owns their master's? Most prominently Jay and Nas, among others. These artists alive are all at risk for mysterious deaths when they stop or slow down their music production because the music industry is always looking for martyrs to capitalize on their deaths once music production slows down or ceases for one last money grab. Nas never drops every year...he's used to dropping every other year. Nas knows what's up with the shady music industry with shadow puppet masters, record labels, and executives. Nas just can't outright say the dangers of what he is facing so he is forced to put it coded in music as a dog whistle for specific people to receive the message...he's upping his music production after he was freed of having the court system misinterpret his rap lyrics when he was fighting for child custody against Kelis. There are specific dangers of owning your own publishing because the industry will make moves behind the scenes to recoup your catalog. Jay is friendly competition and Nas sees a bigger threat in the industry with labels and record executives so he is addressing it to all 1-percent or 0.1-percent fortune owners who all have the king's disease, which basically flies over the heads of most audiences, as most Nas records do when they are initially released and they grow on you years later after you have matured to his stage to think about life's consequences at that level.
So yeah, given that Jay saw MJ's strategy of buying up people's catalog to win beefs outright, Jay is eyeing on Nas' catalog to purchase if he were to have an untimely death and then it would be declared that Jay won the ultimate war against Nas as he did against 2Pac. So this story revolves around Nas, 2Pac, Jay, MJ, and Eminem because they are the biggest money makers for the record industry and record labels and executives are always coming up with new strategies to do heinous things for the sake of more profit.
Nas basically made a prophetic statement in 2007 because he wants to have his music catalog so large with great money management and people so that nobody ends up buying the rights to Nas' when Nas said that verse in 2007, he didn't own his own record label until 2012 and he took strides in investments and upping his catalog, which is why it is worth repeating again, because it was foreshadowing for things to come and some of Nas' goals have been realized since then:
  • But I don't give a fuck, walk inside the lion's den...Up your catalog, dog, mine's worth too much/Like Mike Jacks ATV pub, Mottola can't touch
When they performed 'success' at the Apollo, you can tell which lines Jay were feeling based on what Nas bars Jay rapped along to: and as you clearly see, Jay did not recite the last bar at all, which is the one we just overanalyzed

2020.09.09 07:33 kaleviko [All] Bad binoculars

In P16, Jerry Horne witnessed something happening on a large rock in the middle of nowhere, watching it through his backwards held binoculars. It wasn't exactly sure if he saw Richard being burnt into oblivion or something else taking place there, but somebody got killed. Jerry started hitting his binoculars against the ground.
Jerry: "Bad, bad binoculars. Bad binoculars! Bad, bad, bad binoculars!"
That this was because he somehow thought they had caused a death on the rock was clarified in P17 when some Sergeant Williams called Ben Horne that they had found now naked Jerry in Wyoming.
Sergeant Williams: "Got a guy here - no identification, won't give his name, says he's your brother. Says his binoculars killed somebody."
Now that's an intriguing mystery!
User raspfan recently suggested we should treat "bad binoculars" as an anagram that could lead us to the identity of the culprit who was responsible for what happened on the rock. Since it seems we already got two anagrams elsewhere in the season, both kicking the plot forward, that might indeed be the right way to go. Optionally, we should figure out how binoculars could be used as a long-distance weapon.
Before delving to that, let's have a look at Diane's messaging first. In the same episode that Richard got burnt when he reached the location of the coordinates, Diane was sitting in the hotel bar, about to send some coordinates.
First, she received an iMessage at 16:31 that said, ": - ) ALL." which seemed to upset her.
When she had got hold of herself again and was about to reply to the message, it had changed into a text message, now received at 16:44. She replied by sending a long number sequence to the sender, also as a text message. The sequence was almost the same that she had memorized in P10 from Albert's picture he had taken of numbers in a dead woman's arm. Back then, they had treated the numbers as coordinates, and later in P16 Diane confirmed to Cole, Albert and Tammy she had sent the coordinates to some man:
Diane: "I - I sent him those coordinates."
Something went wrong, though, as it seems she had actually sent the numbers as an iMessage when her phone screen was briefly visible at 33:18, and now also the original message from the unknown sender was an iMessage again. But we had seen her send the numbers as a text message.
What was the point in changing an iMessage to a text message for a single shot of her phone screen?
One thing to notice there was the time stamp of the message she replied to that had changed from 16:31 to 16:44 in the conflicting shot. Was the messaging flip there to indicate we needed to find something to do with numbers 16:44?
Since the episode was P16, let's try checking what was going on at 44:00. There was a shot of the Mitchum brothers in their casino lobby, leaning slightly towards each other, with a bit blurred security guard standing in the background right in between them. The arrangement of the scene was curiously reminiscent of the smiley in the message, ": - )".
Maybe this was the moment we needed to get to. But then what?
Now, it's a good moment to get back to those binoculars. Sergeant Williams told Ben that Jerry had blamed his binoculars for killing somebody. Perhaps it was then just this one word we needed to treat as a potential anagram. Optionally it could be "bad binoculars" that would be far more complicated to solve meaningfully as there are a number of legitimate outcomes.
A possible solution for a "binoculars" anagram is "casino blur". A casino was heavily involved in the story and also appeared in the same episode. Furthermore, just as this was Jerry's witness account, there was another witness account in P7, needlessly replayed in P10, when some woman credited as Soccer Mom recalled what she had seen when Ike had attacked Cooper.
Soccer Mom: "All I saw was a blur."
So, Diane sending the coordinates led to a blurred casino security guard who was standing between the Mitchum brothers. Elsewhere, Jerry telling who had killed someone at the location of the coordinates led to some blur in the casino. Put together, both seem to point to that guard.
Elsewhere, I proposed that while Candie and the two cocktail girls were collectively an incarnation of Laura in this curious "version layer" Las Vegas that duplicated and triplicated things, a security guard called as Joe and two other similarly dressed white security guards, including the one that was standing between the brothers in P16, were collectively Philip Gerard.
Thus, it looks like it was Gerard who killed somebody on the rock.
But who this somebody really was? Later in P16, Eddie Vedder was singing in the Roadhouse, apparently throwing us a little hint what had been going on earlier:
"I stare at my reflection To the bone Blurred eyes look back at me"

2020.08.27 20:32 zedsdeadbaby81 [TOMT] [song] Song in UK charts mid 90s - 2005 latest

Right how do I put this?! There was this song that was very 'kitsch' in a similar vein to Mike Flowers' Wonderwall cover. Very retro 60s/70s sounding. It was sung by a guy in an overly brash/confident way almost with the manner of a Las Vegas or TV entertainer. He was singing I think about 'the big time' being part of the crowd or something along those lines - very much professing success or winning or celebration but very tongue in cheek and almost pointing fun at that kind of song (not peter gabriel's big time). That's all I can say tbh - the challenge is on and really well done if you get this! Cheers

2020.08.26 02:12 vegas42001951 What Honda Should I Buy Re: Looking For Guidance On How To Proceed With Dealership When Purchasing a Used Car Paid For By Trust

x-posted from askcarsales who said I should post here
Apologies in advance for all of the questions.
Partial letter from trust attorneys:
"We agree to make a distribution to cover the purchase of the car...My suggestion is to have the trust either wire the money or issue a check to the automobile dealer once you sign the paperwork."
Having already communicated with the trustees I stipulated that I would not be spending more then 20k. I also made known that I arbitrarily choose Honda and that I was interested in a late model CPO car. I do know that used cars are scarce nowadays. Purchase will be in Las Vegas NV. There to my knowledge 4 authorized Honda dealerships. Findlay Honda Las Vegas, NV 89130, Honda West Las Vegas, NV 89117 AutoNation Honda East Las Vegas Las Vegas, NV 89104 and Findlay Honda Henderson Henderson, NV 89014.
Is it a good idea to sign all the paperwork before the wire transfer comes through or should once I settle on a car ask the dealership to hold the car for me. Trustee mentions above funds will be issued once the paperwork is singed. Alternatively I could give them a deposit on my credit card but would expect the amount to be fully refunded once the wire transfer comes through.
With the scarcity of used cars are there any 2020 Honda's out the door price under 20k that any of you in the know would recommend? Same question regarding 2017-2019 Honda CPO's. Any Honda models to stay clear of in my price range? Didn't I read that the Civic had air conditioner condenser problems?
Any further guidance much appreciated. Thank you.
I don't care about make or model or trim or color. I am only looking for the most reliable highly reviewed 20k Honda new or CPO. Thank you.

Am I correct in assuming that the dealership would prefer to get a wire transfer rather then a check? I believe I would prefer a wire transfer since it should be quicker than cutting a check and sending it though the mail and I could get the car off the lot in a day or so.
Didn't I read in this sub that the Civic had air conditioner condensers problems?
Any further guidance much appreciated. Thank you. Oh and how do I negotiate this kind of transaction. Since there will be no financing I know that is a shot against me. When should I bring up the fact that the car will be paid in full by a trust?
I don't care about make or model or trim or color. I am only looking for the most reliable highly reviewed 20k Honda new or CPO. Thank you.

just got into new vegas on my 6th play through and decided to flip through the TV channels. Cue Elvis Presley singing viva las vegas and scenes showing the las vegas casinos, including "The lucky casino". What a coincidence

2020.08.22 23:34 theecreepyslime it talked back.

I came home from school, and sat on the couch while I watched some Netflix with my younger sister. Our brother was taking a nap and both our parents were out of town. We lived in las vegas so it was usually hot,and we couldn't blast the AC because our parents always bitched about us running the bills through the roof. My grandma had left the house to return home after watching my brother when I got home from school. I figured that my parents being gone and my younger sister being so cool and down for anything that I would invite a boy over. I asked her to call a friend so she could stay the night while I called my grandma so she could come get my brother. An hour passed and I had helped my younger sister pack clothes for her get together. I told her I would drive her to her friends house when our grandma came to get my brother. As soon as my grandma left with my brother, I drove my younger sister to her friends house. And I also picked up the boy I had invited over. It was late by the time we got to my house, and as soon as we got in my house we started for the alcohol cabinet. I poured a half cup of wine for the both of us, and we drank it down followed by 2 shots for each of us, and a shared beer. By the time we got to my room I was almost drunk but I was mostly in a vibe state of mind. I was more free feeling then when I'm sober. He laid me on my bed and laid down next to me, I didn't plan on having sex until he started rubbing my body, I took off my shirt but before we could go any further I got a call that startled me. I ran to the phone and my grandma had to bring my brother back because she was getting a call from the hospital she worked at. And my grandpa was already asleep. The boy I invited left and soon it was me and my brother. We had a loft and I bought him in there while I did some homework he had a lot of toys, that made noise. But none of then repeated things back to him like an elmo doll or a song along toy. I was almost done with my paper for English when my brother made a noise and a truck that sings songs, made the noise back to him. I turned around and said hi to my brother but the toy didn't repeat hi back to me so I figured maybe I was too drunk to focus and my mind was playing tricks on me. Until my brother started crying later in the night. And I went in his room to see the toy moving on its own. I was too scared to stay alone so I called my sister and thank god she answered, I went to go get her and we stayed in my brothers room. I told my grandma about it the next day and she started laughing saying that it was all apart of the ritual. I died 8 years ago and I know this story is true because i was the toy and I will kill again
